UMBRIAN VILLA

WHERE IT IS...AND GETTING THERE

We're in the geographic center of Italy, north/south and east/west, in the province of Umbria which is appropriately called The Green Heart of Italy.  The luminous light here can be amazing.  The Villa is in the hills, at a lovely altitude of nearly 2,000', in a tiny village called Morruzze.  We're between the splendid small city of Orvieto, famous for its white wine and one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy, and Todi, a smaller, less well-known medieval city -- a beautiful gem founded by the Etruscans (it's older than Rome).

Todi is a 20 minute drive from the house on back roads through lovely, pastoral countryside. Orvieto is a 30 minute drive, with much of the drive along the shore of Lake Corbara, and our nearest train station is in Orvieto.  Both cities have wonderful restaurants and shops, and are endlessly fascinating to visit. Both have theaters and an opera house, and, on a practical level, both have fine supermarkets.  Day to day grocery shopping is easily and very pleasantly done in local shops scattered among the handful of little nearby villages.

You will need a car while you're here.  You can rent one at any airport, or from Hertz in Orvieto if you choose to arrive in Umbria by train.  You can Google Trenitalia for schedules and fares.  The Hertz office is a two minute walk from the Orvieto train station.  Booking should be done in advance.

The closest major international airport is Rome Fiumcino. It's a two hour drive from Rome to Morruzze, our little village. (Airport pick up can be arranged.) The next closest major airport is Florence, about a 2 1/2 hour drive, and Pisa is not much farther.  There is also a secondary airport in Perugia, which is under an hour away, but it has a limited number of flights from a fairly short list of European cities.  If you're fortunate enough to be able to arrange to fly to Perugia you'll find a fine, small regional airport.

If you're coming to Umbria by car, you'll take the A1 autostrada north from Rome or south from Florence, exiting at Orvieto. I'll provide more detailed directions for getting to the house as needed.
